The demand for alarm clocks began at roughly the same time as the industrial revolution. It was then that people became acutely aware of the time of day, particularly as it pertained to punching a time clock. For most people, not much has changed regarding the need for alarm clocks. What have changed are the alarm clocks, themselves.
In the postindustrial society of today, alarm clocks are available with countless features. If desired, one can awake to music, aromatherapy or simulated sunlight. For the light sleeper these options are nice, but for those that do not sleep light, the old-school ringing bells, or the slightly newer screeching tones are still available.
Waking to music is not all that new a concept. Alarm clock radio combinations have been around for some time. Generally, radio alarm clocks have poor sound quality, but are inexpensive and easy to operate. Such clocks provide the rude awakening that most people have come to know and despise. CD alarm clocks are available in many styles, and from numerous manufacturers. Anyone can choose to wake to their favorite song every morning. However, look carefully at a CD alarm clock's features before purchase. Many CD alarm clocks will only play the first track on a disc, and some do not come equipped with radio capability. While this may work for the kids, adults sometimes need to take in a little news, or at least a weather report, before starting their day.
Perhaps the best musical waking option is the iPod alarm clock. An iPod alarm clock allows the user to awake to the song of their choosing, and it does so with exceptional sound quality. An iPod alarm clock has a docking station for an iPod, and is usually equipped with AM/FM radio. It also looks quite handsome on the nightstand. These alarm clocks are also available with nature sounds, which may not be useful for waking up, but are quite nice when it is time to go to sleep.
Alarm clocks have become a necessity for travelers. Though most hotels will provide the basics for waking up, travelers may sleep better having set an alarm they are familiar with. A good travel alarm clock should be compact and easy to operate. Most travel alarm clocks are inexpensive, but those interested in saving a couple of dollars should figure out how to use the alarm on their cell phone.
Of course, the alarm clocks described above merely scratches the surface of the options available. Kids can wake to their favorite cartoon character. Some new alarm clocks are designed for those accustomed to abusing their snooze button. The snooze button-happy individuals can correct their habit with an alarm clock that will actually roll away and hide when the snooze button is pressed, forcing a person to get out of bed when the alarm sounds again. Another anti-snooze clock bounces a small jigsaw puzzle off its top as the alarm sounds. The alarm will not stop until the puzzle is reassembled.
For some, the cost of puzzle alarm clocks would be prohibitive, constantly having to replace damaged clocks that have been bounced off a bedroom wall. Those prone to morning bouts of rage would do well to invest in above described musical alarm clocks. Everyone else simply needs to find what works for him or her to consistently wake on time.
